A recent research called Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed that the number of Vietnamese students who usually skip class is surprisingly high. Especially in universities - don’t be surprised if you see a student not go to school almost weeks! Students’ skipping class is a problem that has upset most teachers and educators for a long time. To improve this situation, what should we do with these students - punish them or not?

To this question, I think the answer should be “Yes”. There are many reasons to take serious discipline. On one hand, going to school is an affective way of learning to students. Lecturers help students deeply understand our lessons. They can also answer questions about lectures and give students guide about which materials they should find for further reference or which books can help them with assignments and tests.

Skipping class has a bad impact on study results. If a student skips class too regularly, he or she will lose a lot of knowledge as well as useful information in this subject, such as assignments or presentations, or tests... Of course they can get notes from other students, but these notes is not really meaning to their study. In PISA, how results affected by skipping class is expressed by percentage. And this number in Vietnam is much higher than this of many other countries as well as average number.

On the other hand, skipping class is the question of discipline. Attending class during the courses is regulation at almost every school and university. Although many students say that they can get a good hold of the lesson without attending class, keeping discipline in school or university is still extremely necessary. To consciously abide by discipline is a way of training one’s self-aware and it is good for their future, both in careers and personal life.

Punishment, however, is a necessary and temporary solution, not a thorough one. Classes, lecturers and tutorials are formed to provide students with basic information and knowledge, but some are too boring that students skip class in fact. Some others are not very necessary and students can study at home using their own material or the Internet. So which role do these classes play in academic curriculum? Should teachers and educators look into this question? If a class is full of interesting information as well as able to motivate students’ ability, punishment will be necessary no longer.

Many universities now keep students in class by punishment. Students are not allowed to take exam if they skip class too regular. However, these students’ results are not really good. Punishment is necessary to keep students in class, but that is not enough. We need to do something to stimulate students’ eager for study. There is something wrong with our educational system and it is time for us to change.
